Description
1880 Trade Dollar, PR68
Finest Non-Cameo Example at NGC
1880 T$1 PR68 NGC. The 1880 Trade dollar was struck
exclusively in proof format, with no accompanying business-strike
mintage. Its proof-only status became widely known almost
immediately, causing speculators to order a large number of proof
sets in early 1880 (this activity actually began the year before,
with the proof-only 1879 issue). Although the speculation subsided
later in the year, the 1880 Trade dollar claims the largest proof
mintage of any issue in the series, at 1,987 pieces. Although the
1880 proof is easily located in grades up through the Gem level,
finer examples are definitely elusive. This delightful PR68 specimen is the single-finest non-Cameo example at NGC (1/16). The design elements exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout and the frosty texture of the devices creates noticeable (if undesignated) cameo contrast with the deeply reflective fields. The impeccably preserved surfaces offer mostly brilliant centers, with vivid highlights of greenish-gold and cerulean-blue toning at the peripheries. Eye appeal is terrific.(Registry values: N7079)
