Description

1882 Trade Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Starkly Contrasted

1882 T$1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. The year 1882 continued the string of proof-only Trade dollars begun in 1879, but the proof emission managed once again to rise weakly above the 1,000-coin level, specifically 1,097 pieces. The slow death of the Trade dollar was all quite operatic, taking more than a half-decade including the 1884 and 1885 issues. The devices on this piece display glacial mint frost against brilliant mirrors on each side, with a near-total absence of visible color -- just a glint of gold near the rims, and a couple of tiny dark toning spots on the rim at about 5 o'clock. There is scant visible evidence of contact, and the strike is sharp, save for a few details (such as the lowest arrow fletchings on the reverse) that are likely the product of master hub deterioration. Census: 11 in 66 Ultra Cameo (1 in 66+, 1 in 66 , 1 in 66+ ), 6 finer (5/23).(Registry values: P1)
