    1876 Twenty Cent, PR65+ Cameo
    Superlative, Fully Struck Type Coin

1876 20C PR65+ Cameo NGC. CAC. The concept of a circulating twenty cent piece was deeply flawed from the outset. The coin was too close in size and design to the popular Seated quarter, and it is a certainty that the first time a user lost five cents in a transaction, (s)he would never accept another one in change. (One could call it the Susan B. Anthony dollar of the 19th century.) The odd denomination died a merciful death as a commercial coin within two years, although proofs were issued in four.
The proofs of 1876 were struck in the amount of 1,260 pieces. The surfaces on high-grade examples are always deeply mirrored, as here, so the frost on the devices gives the coin sharp cameo contrast. This piece is fully struck with a wealth of detail never seen on a business strike. The brilliant centers complement light peripheral golden-rose color on each side. A tiny, curved lint mark occurs in the right field out from Liberty's leg. Census: 20 in 65 (1 in 65+) Cameo, 12 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 27H3, PCGS# 85304)
