Description

Part of 1877 Proof Set

1877 20C Twenty Cent Piece PR66 Cameo NGC. The twenty cent piece's short career in the annals of American numismatics saw the production of just four proof issues from 1875 through 1878, with the last two proof-only, 510 pieces in the case of the 1877 according to the Guide Book; Breen quotes a figure of 350 pieces. But the mintage matters not a whit with a piece of such high quality, a deeply contrasted silver-white Premium Gem with little trace of color on surfaces that are well-struck and essentially pristine. It is easy to see how the populace of the day could confuse these odd-denomination coins with the Seated quarter, dooming the issue to an early death. This is a super example for type-set purposes. Census: 7 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (11/12).
