Description

1878 Twenty Cent Piece, PR62
A Popular, Proof-Only Issue

1878 20C PR62 NGC. The 1878 twenty cent piece is the final year of issue, although strikes for circulation stopped in 1876. The last two years were proof-only, and the 1878 had a production run limited to 600 pieces. As one would expect, this tiny production makes this a very popular issue. As with many twenty cent pieces, both proofs and business strikes, the fields are exceptionally deep in their mirrored reflectivity. It appears the dies were basined, giving the resultant coins exceptional depth. This piece has hazy gray-white surfaces with slight hairlining. It actually is appears much finer than the stated grade. The devices are fully struck, including the top of the eagle's left wing.(Registry values: N1793)
