1878 20C PR65 PCGS. The 1878 twenty-cent pieces, known only in proof format, are important rarities in the series, from a mintage of just 600 coins. Most of those coins still survive today, with a total combined PCGS and NGC population of 715 coins, nearly 20% greater than the original mintage. Of those coins, 115 are certified in PR65 and higher grades, suggesting that only 15% of all surviving pieces are Gem proof or finer examples.
This splendid representative is one of those 15%, with intermingled blue, heather, and pale gold toning over fully mirrored fields. Population: 23 in 65, 12 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
