Description

1878 Twenty Cent, PR66
Proof-Only Issue, 600 Pieces Struck

1878 20C PR66 PCGS. BF-1, R.3. The twenty cent denomination had been abolished in 1876, but the Philadelphia Mint remained engaged in the production of proofs for collectors through 1878. That year witnessed the manufacture of 600 twenty cent specimens, all widely pursued today by specialists that far outnumber the surviving population. Most proofs grade in the PR62 to PR64 range. Premium Gems are rarely offered. This PR66 twenty cent piece shows colorful toning that includes shades of mainly blue and violet with rose and golden-orange accents. Grade-limiting contact marks, few and far between as they may be, are well-concealed by the eye-catching patina. Population: 11 in 66, 1 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N4719)
