    Description

1864 Two Cent Piece, PR63 Brown
    Rare Small Motto Variant

1864 2C Small Motto, FS-401, PR63 Brown PCGS. The 1864 Small Motto proof two cent piece is the rarest issue of the series. Mint records indicate that approximately 100 proof two cent pieces were struck for inclusion in the proof sets in July of 1864, but Walter Breen suspected most, if not all, of that mintage was of the Large Motto variety. Breen estimated only 12-15 Small Motto proofs were produced, perhaps in April of 1864, as individual issues. Recent research indicates a slightly larger mintage, as PCGS CoinFacts estimates 20-30 examples are extant today, in all grades, degrees of contrast, and color designations.

The obverse die was first used on the 1864 two cent pattern, Judd-366, causing some numismatists to speculate that the Small Motto proofs were actually intended as patterns. The die is strongly hub-doubled, with the doubling most easily seen on the left arrowhead and WE in the motto. This sharply detailed PR63 example shows the doubling on many obverse devices on close examination. Dark olive-brown patina blankets the lightly marked surfaces, muting the natural reflectivity of the fields. The 1864 Small Motto proof two cent piece is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. We expect intense competition from series specialists when this lot is called. Population: 1 in 63 Brown, 3 finer (7/16).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 274S, PCGS# 3624)
