    Description

Exceedingly Rare 1864 Small Motto Gem Proof Two Cent Piece

1864 2C Small Motto PR65 Red PCGS. While the business strike 1864 Two Cent piece is one of the most common of the short-lived issue, the proofs of that year are quite rare with an estimated production of just over 100 pieces consisting of two varieties. The Large Motto is the more common type, if you wish to call it that; the Small Motto is exceedingly rare. The actual mintage is unknown, but Breen estimates 12 - 15 specimens were probably coined late in April outside of the normal issue of proof sets. On July 12th, approximately 100 proofs were struck for inclusion in 1864 proof sets; these were apparently all Large Motto varieties.
This wonderfully preserved example exhibits a rich copper-red appearance. There appears to be none of the often-seen streakiness so prevalent of Two Cent proofs, and even a close inspection with a magnifier reveals no mentionable carbon spotting. The underlying fields are nicely mirrored and there are essentially no detracting marks, hairlines, or other problems. This lot presents a very rare opportunity to purchase this exceedingly rare variety. Population: 1 in 65, 1 finer (12/04).(#3626) (Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 274S, PCGS# 3626)

    Weight: 6.22 grams

    Metal: 95% Copper, 5% Tin & zinc
