Description

1868 Two Cent, PR65 Cameo
Spectacular Red Surfaces

1868 2C PR65 Red Cameo PCGS. CAC. The two cent denomination, created by the Mint Act of April 22, 1864, was introduced in the wake of the Civil War. The public demanded "hard money" in order to replace the fractional currency that had taken its place. By 1868, two cent coins flooded the market and mintages were on the decline. Only five years later in February 1873, the obsolete denomination would be eliminated.

This Gem proof, from an estimated mintage of 600 specimens, features gorgeous, coppery Red surfaces and bold Cameo contrast. Luster abounds and the devices are fully struck. A handful of wispy marks have no affect on the visual appeal. Population: 5 in 65 Cameo, 6 finer (6/14).(Registry values: P2)
