Description

1868 Two Cent, PR66 Red
Original Red Surfaces

1868 2C PR66 Red NGC. The Mint reportedly struck 600 or so two cent proofs in 1868. Breen wrote in 1988: "Proofs have serif of D restored by hand to working rev.; ornament below WE weak." Blushes of rose-violet accent the copper-orange surfaces of this Premium Gem proof. Each side is seemingly pristine, and the devices are predictably pinpoint-sharp, save for the previously mentioned softness on the ornament. Minimal carbon appears on the reverse. Census: 7 in 66 Red, 2 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N2998)
