Description

1869 Two Cent Piece, PR66 Red
Splendid, Conditionally Impressive Specimen

1869 2C PR66 Red PCGS. From an original mintage of "600+" pieces, according to the Guide Book, this issue has only seen a total of 20 examples graded at PR66 Red: 12 coins at PCGS and 8 examples at NGC; and none finer at either service (5/14). Of course, this number may (and probably does) include one or more resubmissions of the same coin.

The present specimen is one of the most visually pleasing proof two cent pieces that we have seen in recent years. The bright, brilliant, reddish-tan surfaces are highly reflective in the fields and mildly frosted on the devices. Most impressive is the razor-sharp definition across both sides, which is unusually full and precise even for a proof striking. The surfaces are free of post-strike imperfections, while a squiggly lint mark is noted near the center of the lower shield lines on the obverse. Population: 12 in 66 Red, 0 finer (5/14).(Registry values: N2998)
