Description

1871 Two Cent Piece, PR65 Red Cameo
Extremely Rare With a Cameo Designation

1871 2C PR65 Red Cameo PCGS. The proof 1871 two cent piece was included in both silver and minor proof sets of the period; 960 pieces were struck for the former, and likely 105 for the latter, though it is unknown if all were actually distributed, or if some were left unsold and later melted. Full Red survivors are scarce, but Cameo representatives are undeniably rare in any grade. This piece is one of just three Red Cameo examples certified by PCGS, with the others being a PR66 and a PR67 coin (8/14). Bold die doubling is observed on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the wreath leaves, and the arrowheads. This doubling is evident on all proof 1871 two cent pieces, as all were coined from the same die pair. Frosted devices deliver bold contrast with the deeply reflective, coppery-red fields, and the strike is crisp throughout.(Registry values: P1)
