Description

1872 Restrike Two Cent, SP63 Brown
Newly Recognized Special Strike
Only Two Certified So Far

1872 2C Restrike SP63 Brown PCGS. PCGS now recognizes a class of restrike 1872 two cent pieces that differs both from the original 1872 circulation strikes and the proofs of this date. Currently, two of these Special Strikes are certified, one of which is offered here. The die pair utilizes the circulation strike obverse, but lapped leaving telltale die lines, especially above the shield below WE in IN GOD WE TRUST. However, the reverse is unique and differs from the proof reverse used from 1868 through 1872 as well as the one used in 1873. John Dannreuther's forthcoming United States Proof Coins, Volume I: Copper will list coins from this die pair as JD-2. It is believed these restrike 1872 coins were made for sale to collectors sometime after 1872, in response to demand for the low-mintage date. The new designation is likely to result in the 1872 Restrikes becoming an essential issue for the Complete Varieties Registry Set. The present coin displays razor-sharp definition and appreciable field reflectivity. Vivid red, green, and orange-gold encompass the obverse, while the reverse displays golden-orange and russet-amber in a mottle pattern that will serve as a pedigree marker for future auctions. PCGS Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (11/25).
