Description

Final Year 1873 Two Cent Piece, Closed 3, PR63

1873 2C Closed 3 PR63 Brown NGC. 1873 saw the last hurrah for the short-lived two cent piece denomination. The Closed 3 variety, so called because of the numeral's strong resemblance to an 8, was the original variety released during the year, with the less common Open 3 variety believed to be a restrike. This is a solidly struck, generally copper-brown coin with red highlights in the peripheries and somewhat more reflectivity on the surfaces than ordinarily found on this date. The grade appears to be limited by a few marks near the denomination. (Registry values: N1793)
