Description

1873 Closed 3 Two Cent, PR65 Brown
Some Mint Red Remains

1873 2C Closed 3 PR65 Brown NGC. It is possible that some 1873 Closed 3 proofs were melted as unsold when April 1 arrived, and with it the mandate to switch to the Open 3 design. This Gem example avoided the melting pot, and instead was well-preserved by careful hands. An overlay of bluish-brown patina allows faint glimpses of Mint red to survive and embellish the sharply struck surfaces. All Closed 3 proofs are considered "originals," while the 1873 Open 3 proofs are so-called restrikes. Census (Closed 3): 15 in 65 Brown, 9 finer (9/17).(Registry values: N1793)
