Closed 3 Original, Only 600 Pieces Struck

1873 2C Closed 3 PR65+ Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. A small proof-only mintage of 600 two cent pieces was accomplished in 1873, the last year of the denomination. All original proofs have the Closed 3 in the date, but a restrike issue is known, all of the Open 3 type. This high-end Gem is a sharply detailed Closed 3 example with reflective, unmarked fields that retain much of their original copper-red color amid hints of light brown and lemon-yellow. Population: 87 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red and Brown, 18 finer (11/12).
