1873 Two Cent, PR65 Red and Brown
'Original' Closed 3 Type

1873 2C Closed 3 PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. According to Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, "It is probable that some of the unsold originals [Closed 3] were melted after April 1, 1873 when the new Coinage Act became effective, abolishing the denomination and changing weights of silver coins." Amber and golden-brown surfaces maintain considerable coppery color, explaining the designation. Violet accents also appear over flashy fields and expectedly sharp devices on this Gem two cent proof.(Registry values: N1793)
