Description

1873 Two Cent, PR64 Brown
Alleged Restrike, Open 3

1873 2C Open 3 PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Walter Breen and the Guide Book call the Open 3 two cent proofs of 1873 restrikes, although it is entirely possible they, too, were made in 1873. Breen exaggerates in his Proof Encyclopedia: "One of these is seen for every 9 or 10 of the closed 3." In reality, there is little difference in the availability of the two variants. Blue-green and amber-gold tones richly color this near-Gem proof. The diagnostic die line through the base of TR is clear. Population: 35 in 64 (1 in 64+) Brown, 14 finer in this category. CAC: 5 in 64, 14 finer (11/17).
