Description

1873 Open 3 Two Cent
Dual-Toned PR66 Red and Brown

1873 2C Open 3 PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. A gorgeous example of the proof-only Open 3 restrikes, which were believed struck after the series' official end in 1873. Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, listing these in its Restrikes and Fantasy Pieces chapter, comments that "one of these is seen for every 9 or 10" of the Closed 3 two cents. He also makes the curious comment "Reverse same as 1872 and closed 3 1873's, or sometimes a different die" without further elaboration. This piece is largely orange-toned on the obverse and plum-toned on the reverse, a stunning presentation with some tinges of blue near the rims on both sides. The strike and preservation are both top-notch. Population: 20 in 66 (1 in 66+) Red and Brown, 0 finer (1/24).(Registry values: N2998)
