    Description

    1873 Open 3 Two Cent, PR66
    Tied for Finest at PCGS
    Scarce Restrike

1873 2C Open 3 PR66 Red PCGS. CAC. The ball is over the right edge of the 8, and the opening of the 3 is relatively wide, confirming the scarce Open 3 attribution. Only 600 or so 1873 two cent proofs were struck, including both Closed and Open 3 varieties. Open 3 two cent proofs are alleged restrikes. Breen writes in his Proof Encyclopedia: "One of these is seen for every 9 or 10 of the Closed 3. Die file mark through base of T(R)." Writing for PCGS CoinFacts, Ron Guth adds that "any Open 3 in PR66 or better is extremely rare."

This marvelous Premium Gem is a must-have for any serious Registry competitor. It features warm pumpkin-gold color over each side and predictably complete design detail. Contact is limited to two ticks under the shield. Population: 6 in 66 Red, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 66, 0 finer (9/17).
