Description

Brilliant Gem Proof 1873 Open 3 Two-Cent Piece

1873 2C Open 3 PR66 Red PCGS. Most all collectors are aware that this is the final year of issue for the two-cent piece, and that coins of this date were struck only in Proof format. It is also widely known that examples of this issue exist with Closed 3 and Open 3 in the date. The unusual aspect of this is that very few proof coins were struck with an 1873 Open 3 date logotype. This is because the majority of Proof example were struck in the first few weeks of the year, prior to complaints about the Closed 3 date style being confused with 1878, a date still in the future. This is a lovely Proof with pinkish-orange mint color and excellent eye appeal. All of the design detail is sharply defined, and the fields are nicely reflective. At this grade, this is tied for the finest certified. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (12/04).(#3656) (Registry values: N4719)
