Description

1940 Walking Liberty Half, PR68
Only One Finer at NGC, CAC-Approved

1940 50C PR68★ NGC. CAC. The Mint struck the Walking Liberty half dollar from 1916 to 1947, suspending production of commercial strikes for seven issues. In addition, proof issues were struck for only seven issues running 1936 through 1942, as World Wars and the Great Depression precluded production of collector varieties. The 1940 proof mintage eclipsed 10,000 pieces (11,179), the first proof half dollar to do so, such that the issue is plentiful today through PR67. While patience can persevere for the committed collector at PR68, finer pieces are extremely rare. PCGS and NGC, combined, show just four examples in PR68?, 15 in PR68+, and just one Walker at NGC graded PR69 (9/25). This magnificent PR68? specimen exhibits razor-sharp definition on all design elements, and the deeply reflective fields are virtually flawless. A few hints of emerald-green toning add to the terrific eye appeal. Census: 87 in 68 (6 in 68+, 4 in 68?), 1 finer. CAC: 26 in 68, 0 finer (9/25).
