Nearly Perfect Proof-69 1941 Half Dollar

1941 50C PR69 NGC. In 1941, the Philadelphia Mint coined 15,412 Proof Walking Liberty half dollars, some with Adolph Weinman's monogram on the reverse and others, like this one, without his monogram. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen explained that the latest Proof examples, struck in November and December have bold initials, while the earlier ones from January through October were produced from lapped dies without the designer's initials. Alternatively, the Proof dies may have been made without Weinman's initials. Careful examination fails to show any other evidence of lapping on the reverse die. Perhaps the coinage hubs lacked the initials when they produced the individual coinage dies. Examples struck in 1942, as well as some earlier Proofs, have also been identified without the AW monogram.
This Superb, Ultra-Premium Gem Proof has light cameo contrast with intense toning over deeply mirrored fields. The obverse has the faintest blue-green toning at the center, surrounded by violet, russet, and amber color at the borders. On the reverse, the surfaces have pale champagne color with hints of teal and iridescent toning. This is a boldly struck Proof as it should be. For the collector who desires a true fully struck Walking Liberty Half Dollar, this is a perfect choice. It nicely illustrates the design as Weinman intended. Over the years, we have only handled about 20 examples that graded PR68, and of course, none at the present grade level. The presence of even the slightest contrast between the fields and devices creates an additional importance to this amazing coin. The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
