Description

1837 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, MS64
GR-23, Colorfully Toned and Sharp

1837 50C GR-23, R.2, MS64 PCGS. A faint die crack from the rim to the outermost point of star 10 is the most reliable identifier for the GR-23 die pair, although this coin shows distinctive die clashing below the chin often called chin whiskers. While many GR-23 examples -- even in high grades -- show heavy obverse flowlines, this Choice Uncirculated example is from an earlier die state with generally smooth fields. We note a short mark near star 3 angling up toward star 4. Lustrous blue and reddish-gold toning confirms the original surfaces of this near-Gem coin. The strike is sharp throughout including most stars, with only slight weakness at stars 4, 6, and 7. Bright mint luster shines through the attractive patina. PCGS Population for the variety: 1 in 64, 1 finer (3/26).
