Description
MS66 Prooflike 1837 Reeded Edge Half Dollar
The First Reeded Edge Half Generally Obtainable
1837 50C MS66 Prooflike NGC. The 1837 Reeded Edge half
dollars are the first viable type alternative for most collectors,
since the historic 1836 Reeded Edge halves were made in such small
quantities, 1,200 examples of the 1836 compared to 3.6 million of
the 1837. Famed specialist Jules Reiver, whose collection we
auctioned in January 2006, wrote the standard reference on the
Reeded Edge halves, but they have failed to capture collector
attention in the way that Bust halves have--likely due to the
increased mechanization associated with their production. This
Premium Gem specimen offers fields that are noticeably prooflike,
even through the layers of gray and rose toning with blue at the
margins. The strike is full, with peripheral die cracks appearing
on each side. One singular mark occurs between stars 9 and 10. A
wonderful type coin. Census: 9 in 66 Prooflike, 3 finer
(2/10).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24G4, PCGS# 6176, GSID# 6219)
