1839-O GR-1 Half Dollar, AU55
Late Die State Example

1839-O 50C GR-1, R.1, AU55 NGC. Five die pairs produced 178,976 pieces for the 1839-O Obverse Mintmark, Reeded Edge date. On GR-1, the mintmark is repunched at its lower left curve and a ragged die crack angles downward in the date from star 13 through 9 to the bottom of 3. Die cracks encircle the reverse through the legends, with die lumps along the cracks. Brownish-gray toning shows iridescent colors especially on the reverse. The original surfaces are heavily patinated but Choice About Uncirculated definition remains. NGC Census (all five varieties combined) : 48 in 55, 94 finer (12/25).
