Extraordinary Novodel Pattern 5 Roubles

Elizabeth gold Novodel Pattern 5 Roubles 1755-CПБ MS63★ NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-N22, Bitkin-H554 (R4), Fr-114. 8.41gm. This special selection is part of an experimental series of 5 Rouble Patterns having slightly different design details and struck in two diameters. The smaller version at 23 millimeter utilized the obverse dies of the 2 Ducat, without the obverse mintmark. The larger type in 25 millimeter seen here uses the present obverse style, which contains the mintmark below the bust. 1755 was an important year for Russian coinage, as there was major monetary reform that introduced, among other measures, the 5 and 10 Rouble denominations. An attempt to reincorporate Saint Andrew, the heavenly protector of Russia, was also unsuccessfully made during this time, as this unadopted Pattern attests.

This Choice Mint State Star offering is an incredible example of such a storied Pattern series, semi-Prooflike to the point that NGC felt it was necessary to reward it with a "Star" superlative and design motifs that are fully struck, a delightful contrast to business strikes of Elizabeth coinage that are often softly rendered on the high points of the the Czarina's bust. The surfaces on this piece is excellent, displaying a thoroughly honeyed patina and glassier areas of tone that hug the devices. A majestic offering that is as beautiful as it is rare, hailing from the Dr. Robert Hesselgesser lineage that claims so many of Russia's great numismatic treasures.
