Description

Alexander II Rouble 1866 CПБ-HI MS65 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-Y25, Dav-289, Bit-79 (R). An extremely impressive piece, exhibiting highly lustrous surfaces and a brilliant cartwheel radiance. An appealing golden tone shimmers throughout, further adding to its charm and grace. Though five have been graded by NGC and PCGS combined at the MS64 level, no other piece has achieved the gem status which this specimen has attained. Scarcely able to draw upon a comparison, this cataloger could locate only one other example of the type which we have offered--an NGC MS63 PL in our 2006 Long Beach auction, well before the quality Russian market became appreciated. Even so, that piece realized a hammer of $3,250; given the present specimen's overwhelming appeal and the much more enthusiastically supported market for Russian rarities, it would not be a surprise to this cataloger if a bidding level which dwarfs the aforementioned example is easily accomplished.
