Description
Catherine I 2 Roubles With Lisenko Counterstamp
Catherine I gold 2 Roubles 1727 AU Details (Private Countermark)
NGC, Moscow mint, KM178, Bitkin-7 (R2), Fr-101. A supremely
important piece of Russian numismatic history, issued under
Catherine I, the Empress consort of Peter the Great who succeeded
her husband shortly before his death. Catherine was the first woman
to rule Imperial Russia and the first of the four Empress' of
Russia who combined to rule a majority of the 18th Century. This 2
Roubles type was the only gold coinage produced in Russia during
Catherine's brief reign, as she would succumb to Tuberculosis in
1727. This is the latter date in the two-year series, and judging
by historical auction appearances, is the more elusive date
compared to the 1726 issue. This specimen displays a monogram counterstamp on the obverse, executed by Grigori Lisenko, a notable 19th Century collector. Besides the countermark, the most memorable feature of this piece is the original, old-time patina, very attractive except for a few patches on the reverse where the toning has turned to environmental damage. This issue is historically scarce, with auction appearances spanning many years without occurrence. It is a pleasure to once again bring this rarity back to auction, where the appetite from collectors should be as ravenous as it has ever been.

AU Details (Private Countermark) NGC。
