Description

Nicholas I. Novodel 1-1/2 Family Rouble 1836, obverse signed П.У., reverse unsigned, Bust of Nicholas I right/Bust of Empress Alexandra in the center, facing right, surrounded by busts of the Royal children with no circles, Bit-H889, prooflike UNC. Sharply struck with fully mirrored surfaces on both the obverse and reverse with no mentionable flaws. This is a very interesting, and rare, reverse variety, completely different from the usual Novodel reverse. There is a break in the die (or cud) on the rim at 11:30 and 1 o'clock instead of the usual 4-5 o'clock on most Novodels. This same reverse die is pictured in the famous 1968 Hess-Leu Russian Sale 39.
