Description

Nicholas I. Proof Rouble 1839 CПБ-HГ, Crowned Imperial eagle/ Crown above legend, all in wreath, Bit-189, Uzd-1585, Proof 65 NGC. Argent-gray and russet toning with sharply formed devices and deeply mirrored fields. 1839 is a special year for collectors of Russian coinage. Proof examples of this prized year, especially the 1839 Rouble, have been highly sought-after for well over a century. We know of only two Proof 1839 Roubles sold in recent years. There may be more, but we can find no record of others. Both pieces that we can confirm were in the Superior sale of the Irving Goodman Collection in 1991. One piece was part of the 1839 Proof set, and we do not know the final disposition of that set. The piece that we offer was lot 920 of the Irving Goodman Collection. It was later sold to Dr. Robert Hesselgesser, and was sold as lot 5630, in the June 2000 sale of the Hesselgesser Collection. The rarest date Russian Rouble, in perhaps the finest known condition. An example for the finest collection. Est. 80,000-100,000
