Nicholas II gold 25 Roubles (2-1/2 Imperials) 1896 MS63★ NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-YA65, Fr-171, Bitkin-312 (R2), Severin-555 (RRR). Among the most notoriously difficult and sought-after issues in Russian numismatics, due in part to its size and absolute rarity, and struck to commemorate the coronation of Nicholas II, with only 300 pieces of this denomination and date originally minted-and even fewer known to exist today. In recent decades, the vast majority of examples to be witnessed at market have been impaired, with those attaining Mint State status incredibly scarce. Boasting mirrored surfaces devoid of any singularly significant instances of handling and revealing only light wisps that cap the assigned grade, few ever relay as much palpable eye appeal, confirmed by NGC's coveted "star" designation. Tied with just a single other example in technical assignment, we expect only the most advanced of collectors to come away with this prize.
