Description

Rare Coronation Issue in Gold

Paul gold "Coronation" Medal 1797-Dated UNC Details (Obverse Damage) NGC, Diakov-243.7 (unlisted in gold), Smirnov-328c. 43mm. 35.24gm. By C. Leberecht. Obv. Bewigged and uniformed bust r, signed Leberecht.f. below; Cyrillic legend: By the Grace of God, Paul I Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia. An important Coronation issue, often confused as coronation-type Rouble due to the Crown-size format and unique, simplistic reverse design. As with most Russian Coronation issues struck in gold, auction records for these prized possessions are few and far between; Heritage had yet to offer a gold example this specific type until now, though we did sell a variant version in 2019. Paul was the son of Catherine the Great, succeeding his mother upon her death, but their relationship was contemptuous throughout his life. Catherine II actively conspired to limit her son's power in his adulthood, as Paul possessed the strongest claim to the Russian throne as Czar Peter II's only son. This Medal is quite attractive, possessing broad rims, an elaborate display of the Russian Emperor, and an intriguing reverse design. Two gouges and a scratch in the obverse field in front of Paul's chest prevent a problem-free designation, but the significant rarity and popularity as a medallic memento from the brief reign of Paul I are enough to propel this offering to elite collector status.

UNC Details (Obverse Damage) NGC。
