Russia: Peter I gold Ducat 1716 AU53 NGC,...
Description
Choice "Latin Legends" Peter I Gold Ducat
Peter I gold Ducat 1716 AU53 NGC, Moscow mint, KM151,
Bitkin-54 (R2), Fr-90. 3.42gm. No Clasp on Drapery. The final date
and type of Peter the Great's gold Ducat Trade coinage, featuring
the legends in Latin, a change in custom from all previous issues
in the series. Gold Trade coinage issued under Peter the Great is
among the most prized genres of Russian collecting, so given that
this Latin legend type was produced for just one year in 1716,
these issues are immensely desirable. As is common on most of the
Russian gold Trade coinage from throughout the 18th Century, the
flan on this specimen is slightly wavy and uneven, but thankfully
this did not have a negative impact on strike quality. Peter's bust
and the reverse eagle show no prolonged swaths of weakness in the
strike detail, lending to an appreciable visual display. An
excellent quality representative, proudly inhabiting its marigold
flan that yields the occasional glimmer of mint bloom. It was
nearly 30 years ago, in August of 1997, when this issue last was
handled by Heritage. We are thrilled to offer this splendid trophy
coin, fittingly, as part of such a legendary assemblage of Russian
numismatics.From the Geneva Collection
