Original Strike Sophia's Regency Ducat

Sophia as Regent for Ivan V & Peter I gold Ducat ND (1682-1689) XF Details (Tooled) PCGS, Fr-58, Kaim-1857. A veritably rare 17th Century Russian type, not to be confused with the Novodel strikings, which are more common and less desirable than the originals. The original specimens are somewhat crude in appearance compared to the Novodels, and generally display some degree of wear and/or damage. In most cases, wear and handling are seen as detracting features on numismatic specimens, but that is less so the case on an issue such as this; honest wear and contemporary damage can help to solidify the original intent of the strike for use in commerce, adding a greater degree of historical importance for a rare Trade issue such as this. This offering will mark the first occasion of an original Ducat featuring Sophia's rare portrait to sell at Heritage.
