    Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot
    13.06 Ounces
    From the
    S.S. Central America

Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 13.06 Ounces. CABG-726. On the morning of September 12, 1857, after a night of bailing water Captain Badger concluded the S.S. Central America would sink. He went to the Captain Herndon's quarters. According to the New York Times this is what happened next:

"At about 10 o'clock on Saturday morning Capt. Badger went to Capt. Herndon's room and said to him that the storm was abating, but the water in the ship was gaining upon them rapidly and the damned vessel must go down. Captain Herndon said he believed she must; that that he had made up his mind to that; that is was very hard to leave his family thus, but it could not be helped."

The ship did go down, with the loss of 426 lives including Captain Herndon. More than 150 people were rescued, among them many women and children. Millions of dollars in gold coins and bullion was also lost until recovery efforts began in 1988. This is one of the smaller ingots from esteemed California assayers Kellogg & Humbert. The ingot measures 41 mm x 50 mm x 8 mm. The top side is laid out: No 984 / 13.06 Oz / 891 FINE / $210.54. The company hallmark is on the right side and is curiously done. It is just the central portion of a larger hallmark and shows only the bottom of the KELLOGG and the tops of HUMBERT, the only other remnants of the larger imprint are the left and right lines used to frame the hallmark. The back side retains a significant amount of rust from the ship's hull. At the top of that side but covered with the rusted incrustation is a repeat of the serial number 984, but in a different font.
