    Description

    Kellogg & Humbert Assayer's Ingot
    23.29 Ounces, Central America Origin

Kellogg & Humbert S.S. Central America Gold Ingot. CAGB-519. Front face reading No 674 / 23.29 Oz / 875 FINE / $421.26, right face (relative to front) with Kellogg & Humbert Assayers stamp, and back face with numerals 674 repeated. Assayers' cuts on the lower right front and upper left back corners, and a moderately bubbled yellow-gold appearance with significant copper at the rightmost part of the back face.

The entry in A California Gold Rush History describes this example as "Thick." More colloquially, bars of this size were referred to in the Bowers and Merena offices circa 2002 as "Chunky bars," as they were of nearly the same size as the candy bar of that name produced by Nestle. Certainly one of the most immediately apparent aspects of this ingot is its heft, an unexpected force in the hand that is a reminder of the density of gold and the weight of history.

Had history gone according to plan, of course, this ingot would not have survived in its present form. It would have completed its journey up the Atlantic coast aboard the S.S. Central America and been melted down and put to other purposes after arrival in New York. The ship was lost in a hurricane, though, and its golden cargo lay abandoned at the bottom of the sea for well over a century before the wreck was identified and the gold recovered, sending shockwaves through the collecting community. This example is offered with several accessories, including a VHS copy of Gold Rush Money, a metal treasure-chest display case, and a sizable wood case labeled "Kellogg & Humbert Assayers" on top with rope handles and metal fittings as well as a padlock and two keys fitting the previous.
