Description

1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
MS66+, Just 36 Finer at NGC

1907 $20 MS66+ NGC. Warm yellow-gold surfaces are hinted with tinges of rose-gold towards the centers of each side. The nose and thigh exhibit faint weakness on the obverse, and the eagle's breast feathers only lack separation towards the back. Satiny luster bursts forth from both sides, creating dazzling eye appeal.

The year 1907 marked the first full redesign in the double eagle's history, as the Liberty Head motif gave way to the Saint-Gaudens design. The new design is widely viewed as one of the most beautiful in American coinage history, but the artistic emphasis had to be toned back over the course of the year for practical reasons. The original Ultra High Relief design, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek coinage, took too many strikes to fully impart and would not stack properly. Only after two relief reductions did the Mint arrive at a design that could be mass produced, though it was of course altered again the following year with the addition of the motto to the reverse. This example expresses that final design in a nearly unimprovable format in terms of quality. Census: 10 in 66+ (24 in 66 , 3 in 66+ ), 9 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N2998)
