Popular Gem Type Coin
1908 With Motto Twenty

1908 $20 Motto MS65 PCGS. President Theodore Roosevelt was a man who usually got what he wanted. Witness the production of the MCMVII Ultra High Relief twenties, a good run of several thousand "circulation strike" High Reliefs, 500 prototype examples of the 1907 Wire Rim, Periods tens, and finally hundreds of thousands of lower-relief production versions of both of Saint-Gaudens' new designs as modified by the obstreperous Charles Barber. However, Roosevelt lost the battle to keep the motto IN GOD WE TRUST off the new coinage. Roosevelt considered references to God on coinage sacrilegious, but Congress enacted such a requirement anyway, over his strenuous and well-reasoned objections. This is a fully struck green-gold Gem example of this popular type coin, with full articulation of all design details and the minimal contact marks expected for the grade. Population: 39 in 65, 10 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N7079)
