1908 $20 Motto MS66 ★ NGC. Although the 1908 No Motto is common, even in exemplary Mint State grades, it is a different matter for its Motto counterpart. The Motto mintage of 156,258 pieces is only a sliver of the 4.27 million production of the 1908 No Motto, and there are no "Wells Fargo" hoards stocked with Superb Gems. Given the large diameter and soft surfaces of the double eagle, it is unsurprising that most Uncirculated examples are at least moderately bagmarked and grade between MS61 and MS64. However, the present Premium Gem provides an exception, since the shimmery butter-gold fields and devices are nearly bereft of contact.
