1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS66
First Year With Motto

1908 $20 Motto MS66 PCGS. Ex: Fox. Long Rays Obverse. This spectacular Premium Gem from the Rollo Fox Collection is among the finest survivors of this popular issue, from a smallish mintage of 156,258 pieces. Many coins were sent to European destinations early on, and later repatriated. Few actually circulated in this country. Today, the population thins out in grades above MS64. Examples in MS66 condition are rare, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable.

The present coin is sharply detailed in most areas, but just a trace of the usual softness is evident on the Capitol. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster from both sides, with terrific eye appeal. Population: 15 in 66 (2 in 66+), 1 finer (1/20).

David Akers (2012) Comments:
The P-Mint issues from the 1908 With Motto to the 1915 have been a largely underappreciated subset of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series for many years. Recently, collectors trying to put together truly exceptional sets of the series have discovered just how difficult all the members of this nine coin group really are to find in superb mint state (MS66 or better) condition ... Although for a long time the 1908 With Motto was considered one of the rarest of the group, it is now correctly seen to be the second most common in gem MS65 condition after the 1910 although it is not as rare as the 1910 in superb mint state. In fact, along with the 1911, the 1908 With Motto is the most available of the early P-Mint issues in MS66 or higher grade. Even so, only about 12-15 exist at that level.
