1908-D Motto Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS66
Radiantly Lustrous, Smooth and Attractive

1908-D $20 Motto MS66 PCGS. Ex: Fox. The 1908-D Motto issue features Charles Barber's revised master dies, with Long Rays on the obverse and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Other changes refined Liberty's facial features, fingers, toes, as well as the eagle's head and torso feathers. Many of the high-grade 1908-D Motto coins come from a 1983 Central America hoard of well-preserved Mint State examples.

This lustrous and and sharply struck Premium Gem is exquisitely defined and extra-smooth. Frosted medium-gold color flows evenly across both sides, with nearly mark-free surfaces and radiant mint bloom. The issue becomes scarce in MS66 or finer grades -- exceeded by just three MS66+ coins and four finer pieces at PCGS (1/20).

David Akers (2012) Comments:
In 1983, a huge hoard of U.S. double eagles was located in Central America and sold to MTB (Manfra, Tordella & Brookes, Inc.), a New York coin and bullion dealer of renown. It contained many uncirculated examples of both the 1908-D With Motto and 1908-D No Motto, many of them grading choice to gem uncirculated with some superb MS66 and, in the case of the With Motto issue, one or two MS67 specimens included as well. Today, the 1908-D With Motto is only moderately scarce in gem condition and certainly not rare by any means. Superb MS66 examples remain rare, however, and MS67 specimens are extremely rare with only a handful known.
