Condition Rarity 1908-D Double Eagle, MS66

1908-D $20 Motto MS66 PCGS. Like the earlier Liberty double eagles, there are several issues in the Saint-Gaudens series that are conditionally rare in Gem or finer quality. Issues such as the 1908-D that began with a moderate mintage of 349,500 coins are relatively plentiful in lower Mint State grades, but are nearly impossible to find in higher grades. David Akers considers the issue to be underrated and ranks it 20th in the 55-coin series in terms of rarity.
Both sides of this honey-gold Premium Gem have satiny luster with subdued mint brilliance and subtle reflectivity in the fields. A few tiny toning spots can be seen on the obverse, and the surfaces are virtually free of distractions. A winning combination of eye appeal, condition rarity, and high grade. Population: 23 in 66, 3 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
