Description
Low Mintage AU58 1908-S Double Eagle
1908-S $20 AU58 NGC. Among the mintages of Arabic Numerals Saint-Gaudens double eagles, one issue stands out as especially low: the 1908-S. Only 22,000 pieces were struck, a remarkably low number given that all other San Francisco double eagle mintages for that decade approached or exceeded 1,000,000 pieces. The unusually small 1908-S production may have been at least partly due to the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST that year. Perhaps dies from the new reverse hub arrived late. Whatever the reason for its scarcity, a momentarily circulated example of the 1908-S is desirable. The present coin shows only minor marks and retains most of its initial mint bloom.(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26FA, PCGS# 9149, GSID# 10161)
