Famous 1908-S Double Eagle, MS621908-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The alluringly low mintage of 22,000 pieces is the inevitable starting-point for any discussion of the 1908-S double eagle, but there are other fascinating angles to the issue. It is the first S-mint Saint-Gaudens double eagle, for example, and all coins are With Motto, suggesting a limited production later in the year. Also worth noting is that the next year, more than 2.7 million double eagles were struck at the location, suggesting that San Francisco was making up for lost time.
From the brief but famous 1908-S press run comes this MS62 example, a strongly lustrous sun-yellow coin that is well struck. Both sides show numerous light to moderate marks as well as a handful of copper spots, though the overall eye appeal is strong for the grade. PCGS has certified 72 finer pieces (5/10).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26FA, PCGS# 9149)
