Description

1909 Twenty Dollar, MS65
Scarce At This Grade, Strong Eye Appeal

1909 $20 MS65 PCGS. This vibrantly lustrous example displays frosty golden luster and sharply defined design elements. Light contact on the high points of the eagle and Liberty's figure limit the grade, but the fields are largely unabraded. The 1909 Saint-Gaudens double eagle population is almost evenly divided between the 1909/8 overdate and the Normal Date varieties. Neither is significantly scarce in lower Mint State grades, but in Gem or finer condition, the 1909 double eagle becomes highly elusive. Garrett and Guth call the 1909 "one of the true condition rarities of the series ..." The sole example in the Smithsonian Institution grades just MS62, per the same authors. PCGS Population: 23 in 65 (5 in 65+), 9 finer (3/26).
