1909 Double Eagle, MS66
    Tied for Finest at PCGS

1909 $20 MS66 PCGS. Surrounded as it is by lower-mintage issues such as the 1908-S and 1909-D, the 1909 double eagle historically has not attracted substantial attention from collectors despite production in the low six figures. The presence of the 1909/8 overdate, too, distracts attention from the "plain" version. Yet the overdate is more relevant than many think; the surviving populations of regular and overdate 1909 double eagles are near-identical, which, if the original mintages were roughly corresponding, would make both five-figure issues as well.

In 2006, when the first edition of the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins came out, Garrett and Guth noted that "The regular-date coins have just started to be recognized for their rarity in MS-64 or higher grades, and none have been graded finer than MS-66 by the major grading services." While collectors have had a few years since to catch up on the coins' rarity, it still holds true that there are no Superb Gems in the combined certified population (8/13) and just seven MS66 examples graded by PCGS.

This Premium Gem has rewarding luster, apricot-gold in places with zones of lighter yellow. As was sometimes the case, flatness comes out in the strike, particularly on Liberty's knee and the top of the torch. Even so, both areas are lustrous (no wear), and rolling satin luster graces surfaces that are remarkably smooth. An ideal choice for the series enthusiast who insists on nothing but the best.(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26FC, PCGS# 9150)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
