Description

Impressive 1909/8 Double Eagle, MS64

1909/8 $20 MS64 PCGS. Only about 80,000 of these overdate double eagles were originally coined, according to conventional wisdom. Although Mint records do not track the coinage of individual die pairs, the overdate and normal date varieties seem to be equal in overall availability. Since 161,282 double eagles were struck in Philadelphia during the year, it seems that about half that total is the mintage for each variety. Gems are extremely rare, and Choice Mint State coins like this piece are the best that can be obtained without a high level of patience and a strong numismatic budget. The surfaces of this near-Gem are brilliant with frosty luster and rich orange-gold color. Population: 77 in 64, 17 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
