Conditionally Rare Gem 1909-D Double Eagle1909-D $20 MS65 PCGS. In its second year of production for the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, the Denver Mint produced only 52,500 coins. This date was once regarded as a major rarity in Mint State, but the emergence of a Central American hoard in 1983 has made the '09-D generally available in grades up to and including the MS63 level. In Choice, Gem, and finer grades, however, this issue remains elusive. Softly frosted with pleasing cartwheel effects, the surfaces are tinged in reddish-gold hues. Both sides are well produced with sharp definition and freedom from all but a few small abrasions. Population: 6 in 65, 3 finer (10/03).
